Increased Threat of Cyber Attacks – Security Steps to Take Now
The National Cyber Security Centre (“NCSC”) has recently published updated guidance for UK businesses on how they can better defend themselves against the increasing threat of cyber attacks.
The recent guidance selects 6 priority measures that high-risk businesses should be taking now. These include undertaking a readiness review by identifying how and where data logs are stored and improving detection and response capabilities. The NCSC is also encouraging businesses to sign up to the Cyber Information Sharing Partnership, a joint industry and government initiative set up to exchange cyber threat information in real time.
For ways to improve cyber defences, the NCSC refer businesses to their ‘10 Steps to Cyber Security’ Guidance Paper (www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/10-steps-cyber-security). The paper identifies 10 practical steps (such as Network Security, User Awareness, Removable Media Controls, Secure Configurations and Mobile Working Policies) and provides technical advice sheets on how protections can be implemented.
Rebecca Gardner, Corporate & Commercial Partner at Howat Avraam Solicitors comments: Whilst the recent guidance from the NCSC is aimed primarily at larger corporations that are likely to be the prime targets for this kind of attack, in the wake of the implementation of the GDPR in the UK, any business that handles significant levels of data should be looking to improve their cyber defences if they haven’t already done so.
