Women at Work
Much debate surrounded the recent news about Apple and Facebook offering egg-freezing for female employees and in particular, there was a rather large question mark over the extent to which this enhanced gender equality in the workplace.
The Department of Business Innovation and Skill operates a forum for signatory companies (of which there are over 250), to encourage and collaborate on schemes to enhance gender equality and in its recent progress report, Think, Act, notes some interesting facts.
At the end of October 2014, George Osborne proudly announced that there are 67% of women of working age are now in jobs; the highest figure ever recorded! Interestingly, the BIS progress report simultaneously stated that the UK has the eighth highest equal pay gap in the EU which, in part, is due to the high level of women in employment in the UK.
